  • 午前9時頃、愛知芸術文化センターに「ガソリン携行缶持っていく」という脅迫文が届き、愛知県警東署へ通報。

  • 午前:菅官房長官は記者会見で「『あいちトリエンナーレ』は文化庁の補助事業として採択されている。審査の時点では、具体的な展示内容の記載はなかったことから「補助金の交付決定では事実関係を確認、精査したうえで適切に対応していきたい」と発言。

  • 午後:河村たかし名古屋市長は「表現の不自由展・その後」を視察。大村知事に対し、《平和の少女像》の展示中止と撤去を要請。「どう考えても日本人の、国民の心を踏みにじるもの」と発言。その後、河村市長が、大村秀章愛知県知事に対し展示中止を求める文書を提出。

  • 芸術監督・津田大介は記者会見で「行政が展覧会の内容について隅から隅まで口を出し、行政が認められない表現は展示できないということが仕組み化されるのであれば、それは憲法21条で禁止された『検閲』に当たる」と主張。いっぽうで展示変更の可能性についても言及。

  • 大村秀章愛知県知事が、津田大介芸術監督を知事公舎に呼び、8月3日をもって展示終了を提案。

  • 午後11時過ぎ、津田大介芸術監督が、「表現の不自由展・その後」実行委員会に展示中止の意向を説明。 展示中止の意向に対し、「表現の不自由展・その後」実行委員会はリスク検討の不足を主張。

  • 9AM: The Aichi Arts Center in Nagoya receives a faxed threat stating that the sender will “bring cans of gasoline” to the exhibition venue, alluding to the Kyoto Animation arson attack that had shocked the country a few weeks earlier (2019/07/18). The threat is reported to the Aichi Prefectural Police.

  • AM: In a press conference, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga mentions that although the Aichi Triennale received funding from the Agency of Cultural Affairs, there was no clear description of the exhibition content at the time of grant review. Suga states that "the grant funding will be handled according to a thorough inspection of facts," implying the possibility that the grant could be withdrawn.

  • PM: After visiting "After ‘Freedom of Expression?’", Nagoya mayor Takashi Kawamura calls for the removal of Statue of Peace, stating, "[the work] tramples on the feelings of the Japanese people." Kawamura then submits a written document to Aichi Prefecture governor Hideaki Omura, who is also the head of Triennale Organizing Committee, requesting the closure of the exhibition.

  • In a press conference, Triennale director Daisuke Tsuda asserts, "If it becomes systematized that the  administration intervenes in each and every aspect of an exhibition and only allows forms of expression they approve, then that would be censorship, which is prohibited by Article 21 of the Constitution of Japan.

  • Aichi governor Hideaki Omura meets with Tsuda and proposes that "After ‘Freedom of Expression?’” should be summarily closed on August 3.

  • 11PM: Tsuda informs the “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’” Organizing Committee of the decision to close the exhibition on August 3. The organizing committee voices their opposition, pointing to the lack of proper risk assessment in arriving at the decision.

  • In a street interview, Nagoya mayor Takashi Kawamura says that the people involved in organizing “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’” should apologize to the public.

  • An artist talk featuring Sholim, GIFMAGAZINE, and Daisuke Tsuda scheduled to start at 1pm at Nagoya City Art Museum isn cancelled.

  • 2PM: An assembly gathers at the second-floor pedestrian deck of the Aichi Arts Center building to protest the closure of “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’”  30 people participate.

  • 5PM: A demonstration to protest the cancellation of “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’” is held at  at Hope Plaza, in the vicinity of the Aichi Arts Center. There are an estimated 200 participants.

  • By this point the Aichi Triennale Office has received 770 threatening emails violently objecting to the content of “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’”, including one that threatens to “spread sarin gas and gasoline” if the exhibition remains on view. This number includes 144 threats from the same email account. The Aichi Prefecture government files victim reports to the police. 

  • Aichi governor Hideaki Omura publically criticizes Nagoya mayor Takashi Kawamura for his remarks on “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’”, stating that Kawamura’s speaking about the contents of the exhibition in his capacity as a public official “could be construed as a violation of the prohibition of censorship in Article 21 of the Constitution of JapanConstitution.” Mayor Kawamura responds that a minimum regulation on expression is necessary.

  • Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga comments that, “Generally speaking, there should be no violence and threats” in response to an exhibition.

  • Osaka mayor Ichiro Matsui says that “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’” is inappropriate for an exhibition drawing on public funds. “An artwork that is just defamation does not fall under freedom of expression. The ‘comfort women’ [issue] is demagoguery.”

  • On a radio program, Daisuke Tsuda remarks that “this is more a problem of terrorism of culture and art than censorship.”

  • The academic conference called “Women, War, Human Rights” announces its objection to the closure of “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’”

  • The Japan Cartoonists Association releases a statement on the closure of “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’”

  • Triennale Planning Advisor Hiroki Azuma apologizes on Twitter for his part in the closure of “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’”, revealing that he has declined to receive his fee for his work as Planning Advisor, although he will remain in the role to support the Triennale.

  • 4PM: A man is arrested after throwing an unidentified liquid on a police officer in one of the Aichi Arts Center elevators.

  • The man who sent the 8/02 fax threatening an arson attack on theAichi Arts Center is arrested

He comments that “With regard to funded projects, I have never said anything about approving only those that accord with  the wishes of government, nor have I ever given even a sliver of thought to it.”

  • Aichi governor Hideaki Omura announces the forming of the Future of Aichi Triennale Review Committee to assess the events surrounding the closure of “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’” and the possibility of its reopening. The committee comprising six experts in the fields of art and law, l led by Toshio Yamanashi, director of the National Museum of Art, Osaka, as chairman.

  • Aichi Triennale participating artist Mónica Mayer requests alterations to the display of her artwork as in protest of the closure of “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’”

  • The TRANS-KOBE Organizing Committee and Kobe City jointly announce the cancellation of a symposium scheduled for 8/18 that was going to feature Daisuke Tsuda as one of the speakers.

  • 7PM: A Triennale-hosted artist talk with Nodoka Odawara, Riken Komatsu and Daisuke Tsuda, Timing Y/Our Passion around “Public and Sculpture,” is postponed at the last minute.

  • Nagoya mayor Takashi Kawamura reveals he has submitted an official letter of protest to Aichi governor oHideaki Omura for carrying out “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’” without proper consultation with the Aichi Triennale Organizing Committee, of which Kawamura is also a member.

  • 愛知県の大村秀章知事が定例記者会見で、再開に向け不自由展の実行委員会と協議を継続中とした上で警備対策として、手荷物の検査や金属探知機の導入も検討していると表明。

  • 出展作家らが直接、芸術祭や表現の自由への意見を電話で聴く「Jアートコールセンター」が8日から開設されることが発表。会期末の14日までで、正午から午後8時まで受け付ける。

  • 自民党愛知県議団は同県で開催中の「表現の不自由展・その後」を再開すれば、市民の安全維持が懸念されるとして「現時点では再開に賛同は困難」とする文書を、芸術祭実行委員会会長の大村秀章知事に提出したと表明。4日付。

  • In a press conference, Governor of Aichi Prefecture Hideaki Omura indicates that together with the re-opening of the exhibition, there will be inspections of personal belongings and use of metal detectors as a defence measure.

  • “J Art Call” is announced to start on the 8th. It will be open from noon to 8 pm until the 14th, the end of the exhibition.

  • The Liberal Democratic Party of Aichi prefecture reveals they submited a document to Aichi governor Hideaki Omura suggesting that the re-opening of the exhibition will harm the safety of the citizens, stating that they can not agree at this point with the re-opening.   • 大村知事が、8日の再開時に会場で抗議行動をしたとして、河村市長に謝罪と再発防止の確約を求める公開質問状を出す。
